Field of Unity

Despite my long blog silence, I have not forgotten about you! You know that old proverb, “Speech is silver – silence is golden.” Silence can offer ourselves and others valuable time and space. My relocation to Oregon has been a protracted transition, yet I’m settling into my new life here nicely! For many people, everything is new and different – great change is upon us – both personally and collectively.

Many people have shared that they are undergoing significant changes in their lives and feeling the worry or uncertainty of it all. Likewise, the collective unrest is palpable. Our world is experiencing huge changes and can feel very polarized. At times we are being shown the light and the dark in high relief, bold, all caps, and sometimes with flashing neon lights! Old forms dissolve and new ones form in their place. Meanwhile, it can feel as though we have one foot in the old and the other in the new, while being stretched in between.

Times of great change also offer incredible growth – as individuals, as families, as communities, and beyond. But first we must embrace the sanctity and perfection of our differences. Another common theme that people have shared with me is the sense of division they are experiencing. Chasms in themselves, in their lives, in their families, in their communities, and let’s face it, in our country.

What lies behind the curtain of uncertainty, worry and division, is fear. Fear and worry appear to be roiling around as significant changes are underway. The emotion of fear generally rises to warn us of an impending danger. It should be fleeting and instigate some sort of action to avert or mitigate it. The nature of fear itself is like fire – it catches very easily. When it catches and spreads among people, pretty soon a small flame has the potential to become a raging, destructive force.

It’s key for people to not let the flame of fear catch them and embroil them in the dramas. And fear cannot exist in the energies of love and gratitude! They are mutually exclusive. Rumi wrote,

Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.”

Indeed change is upon us – this is nothing new to humanity. The nature of life itself is change, upon change, upon change. To arrive at the core remedy, we must all stand together in the tides of change.

It boils down to choice – in every moment you have a choice.

Lay down your fears, worries and the uncertainty of it all, and embrace and celebrate the growth that change offers. Deepen your commitment to stand for unity rather than division, for peace rather than drama, for truth rather than ego, for love rather than fear. In so choosing, you allow that swinging pendulum come to a slow, smooth rest, right in the center of you.

Let’s stand united in the field of life and choose love. Beauty exists in all things. Everything is sacred.

I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing light of your own being.
